Recent Progress of Epilepsy Management

Abstract
|

It is generally recognized that approximately 80% of epileptic patients can be controlled completely by appopriate drug therapy. For remainning 20% of patients. alternative therapy. Mainly epilepsy surgery. Is more widely performed with
reasonable
success rate. Therefore. Epilepsy is now regarded as a treatable disease.
The choice of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is depend upen the exact diagnosis of epilepsy. types of seizure or epileptic syndromes as well as the adverse effects of AEDs. Currently. Monotherapy is preferred to polypharmacy. When initial-montherapy
fails
to control the seizures. alternative drupg monotherapy is the next step. If alternative drug monotherapy fails. Polypharmacy. Usually two drug combination therapy. Should be considered. For choosing drugs for polypharmacy. Combination of drugs
having
different mechanisms of action seems to be a more logical approach.
Recent introduction of several newly developed AEDs elicited great enthusiams for better control of intractable seizures. These compounds have different structures and different mechanisms of action from conventional AEDs. Which will generage
extensive
clinical investigations for their appropriate clinical use.
